Plan 2 Ways Out

Every Second Counts: Plan 2 Ways Out!

This year’s theme for National Fire Prevention Week is “Every Second Counts: Plan 2 Ways Out!” In the event of a home fire, the difference between life and death is mere seconds. So it is vital to create an escape plan with two routes out of every room.

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), seven people die in U.S. home fires every day. And only one-third of Americans have developed and practiced a home fire escape plan.

At Atronic Alarms, Inc., we are committed to reducing fire-related fatalities, and this is the perfect week for you and your family to take action.

Creating a Fire Escape Plan

To help you create and practice an escape plan, here are some tips to get started:

  • Download the NFPA grid in English (PDF) or Spanish (PDF).
  • Draw a model of your home on the grid.
  • Mark two exits from each room and a path to the outside from each exit.
  • Practice your home fire drill twice a year. Conduct one at night and one during the day with everyone in your home, and practice using different ways out.
  • Teach children how to escape on their own in case you can’t help them.
  • Close doors behind you as you leave – this may slow the spread of smoke, heat, and fire.
  • Once you get outside, stay outside. Never go back inside a burning building.

Other Resources

The NFPA provides a whole range of informative and fun ways to teach children about fire safety on their Sparky School House website. Here are just a couple of the resources available:

  • Sparky’s Fire House – This free app is loaded with games and activities to teach early learners ages 3 – 7 how to stay safe in a fire. Find it in the Apple App Store and on Google Play for Android.
  • Sparky the Fire Dog’s® Brain Busters – This free trivia app challenges students ages 8 – 11 over subjects like math, science, pop culture and fire safety. Find it in the Apple App Store and on Google Play for Android.

The American National Red Cross

The American National Red Cross created a First Aid App that provides step-by-step instructions on what to do for nearly any first aid emergency. It is also integrated with 9-1-1 so you can call EMS from the app at any time. Find it in the Apple App Store and on Google Play for Android.
