  • The October 2009 Issue of the Reader's Digest features a story entitled "Be Your Own Bodyguard" which provides a crash course in self-defense; written by Joe Kita, who interviews several security experts. Below are some points highlighted in the article:

Think Ahead - Don't live in fear, but be smart. Plan ahead for emergencies.

Be Aware of Your Surroundings-Keep an eye out in a crowd for any unsual behavior, and trust your instincts.

In traffic, stop far enough behind the car in front of you so you can "see the rear tires." This leaves you space to maneuver if anyone tries to get into your car.

Attempted Break-In: If you hear a noise in the middle of the night, don't turn on your lights. You have more of an advantage over the intruder because you are more familiar with your home, and it is easy to see you through the window if the lights are on. Dial 911 and press the panic button on your car's remote entry device to set off its alarm.

If You Purchase a Gun for Protection, Learn How to Use it properly!

Certain dogs with loud barks can also deter bad guys.

Wasp Spray makes perfect mace. Keep by your bed or have several cans around the house.

In an Attempted Rape: destroy the fantasy in his mind by saying things like, "I don't like this" and "You're hurting me" and anything to change his perception on what he might feel is a passionate situation.

Safety Tips for You and Your Family

Below are three documents to download that provide information on how to stay safe. The 9-page Residential Security booklet provided by the False Alarm Reduction Association (FARA) had assistance from officers of the Overland Park Police Department in developing this guide, which explains the importance of evaluating the security level in your home, gives you a residential security checklist, and provides a list on what deterrents assist in reducing criminal activity.

Note that at the time it was written (in 2007) there were few security systems which offered monitoring services without a phone line, so the phone line was the main vehicle used to monitor an alarm system. Today, the phone line is still one of the most reliable, but monitoring over the Internet, without phone lines, is becoming increasingly popular. In this case, Atronic still recomends a backup unit to be installed in the home.
