Questions to Ask Yourself while Preparing for an Alarm System (Burglar System, Security System, Home Automation System)

Do I want ownership of the system? Do I want a company that sells the system outright and does not require me to sign a long term contract for monitoring service? This gives me the leverage to switch services if I desire.

Technology is changing; I do not have the time to keep up with the changes. I want a company that is always looking out for new and improved technologies... keeping me informed.
I want a company that is constantly improving its services and training staff on an on-going basis.
I want to make sure that the person(s) coming into my property are insured, and have been background checked on a regular basis.
I want a company that has an "excellent" consumer rating, and that is a member of the Better Business Bureau.
I have worked hard to get where I am, I do not want a company to damage my property with inexperienced installers.
It would be nice to have lighting, thermostats, etc. integrated into the system for safety, convenience, and even saving.
I am afraid of dangers like carbon monoxide and fire. It would be nice to have my system monitored for these types of hazards.
